Second Life
The course explored the topic of preferred futures, and how we can use design fiction and speculation to change our perspectives. The outcome is a multi-choice storybook made of trash from leftovers from school projects. The story and choices the reader makes along the way are meant to make students reflect on what they throw away and how they can reduce waste for their next project.
My role:
Prototyping, design and usertesting were done togther as a group.
My spesific contributions were:
- 3D renders
- operating the lazer cutting machine

Where projects come to die
At School, we have these boxes called "Put & Take" where you can put things you don't want anymore and take what you want. It is a wonderful way to find materials for prototypes, but the boxes are messy.
We thought, that in our preferred future school, all resources circulate within the school as long as possible. We hence started investigating this "Put & Take", and how we can produce our exhibition piece exclusively with second-hand materials.
Non-human perspective
We were inspired by non-human perspectives as a way to create relative speculative narratives to empower change in the reader. Our target group was students at our institution.
We enjoyed the idea of guilt-tripping the reader as a powerful tool to make the reader reflect and change habits.

Taking it one step further
Real-life implementation
After the book was done, we felt like we hadn't ended up creating any change. The "Put & Take" was still the same, and students would continue to use the money on prototyping equipment that would just be thrown afterwards.
Hence, we decided to create some renders and a physical model of how the "Put & Take" could be improved by having it as a designated organized room.
We presented it to the school board, but to our disappointment, they decided not to implement it.
